About me

I am a registered counselling psychologist in Durban (Glenwood Berea), working from a home-based practice, offering adults (18+) client-tailored individual counselling/ psychotherapy (and/ or psychological assessment). I have been in private practice since 1993, with additional experience as a lecturer, student counsellor, police psychologist, and psychosocial training and resources development consultant.

I work with clients experiencing a variety of problems and help facilitate meaningful change through a number of psychotherapeutic modalities and techniques. I have experience in working with a range of clients with various concerns, belief systems, spiritual orientations, lifestyles and cultures. Clients may either be self-referred or referred by another health worker (e.g. general practitioner).

The focus of therapy is to facilitate meaningful change through the use of one or more types of psychological treatment (e.g. Brief Solution Focused Therapy (BSFT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), Psychodynamic Therapy, etc.).

The psychological treatments and/or techniques used mainly depends on commonly accepted treatment guidelines for the type of problem/s experienced by the client. These guidelines are informed by research looking at which treatments are likely to be effective with particular problems/ conditions. However, other factors are also considered before deciding on a treatment plan, such as the severity of the problem, the client's preferences and the like. This said, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in particular, is indicated for a wide variety of problems by professional guidelines such as NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

First meeting: The first meeting is a good opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about therapy, as well as for you to find out whether this feels like a safe and comfortable space for you personally.

Your first appointment with me will be 90 minutes, During this time we will talk about the problem/s you are facing and what you are hoping to gain from therapy, before deciding whether the psychotherapeutic services I am able to offer are well suited to trying to help you deal with these problems. If this service is not suitable, I shall make some suggestions as to what service/s may be better suited for you.

If we decide that my services are suited to your needs and you feel comfortable working with me, then we shall schedule additional assessment or treatment sessions to work together in more detail on your concerns. All future appointments (sessions) will typically be 60 minutes.

Fees: The cost of a 60 minute therapy session is R 800.00 for cash or electronic funds transfer payments (for more information on fees please visit the fees page of this website). Please email kevinsuter@iafrica.com for an appointment .
